Burglaries to Substations Cause Power Outages (Christmas Morning)
Today at 05:26 am we received a call of a burglary to the Tacoma Public Utilities Substation at 22312 46th Ave E. Deputies arrived on scene and saw there was forced entry into the fenced area. Nothing had been taken from the substation, but the suspect vandalized the equipment causing a power outage in the area. Deputies were notified of a second burglary to the TPU substation at 8820 224th St E which also had forced...

Zapped: The grid is on life support. Can AI fix it?
Greg Nichols discusses
America's electric system is long overdue for an overhaul. With a 2021 American Society of Civil Engineering report finding that 70% of T&D lines are over 25 years old, it's no shock that large, sustained outages are occurring with increased frequency throughout the country.
Last year, major outages in California and Texas were both triggered by extreme weather events, causing local power demand to exceed supply. With climate change fueling extreme... -

A pivotal moment in the fight against climate change.
COP26 is the 2021 United Nations climate change conference
For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority.
This year will be the 26th annual summit – giving it the name COP26. With the UK as President, COP26 takes place in Glasgow.

Quantum computing, AI prompts a smarter power grid
Cornell University researchers are using quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI) to make a smarter power grid to reduce blackouts and other issues.
Fumbling to find flashlights during blackouts may soon be a distant memory, as quantum computing and artificial intelligence could learn to decipher an electric grid’s problematic quirks and solve system hiccups so fast, humans may not notice.
Rather than energy grid faults turning into giant problems – such as... -

Brace for possible black outs in Cape Town
Cape Town - Eskom has announced another possible round of black-outs as the country continues to experience cold weather. The struggling power utility urged the public to reduce the usage of electricity in order to help ease the pressure on the power system between 4pm and 9pm, saying the system was currently severely constrained, and that it is anticipated that towards the -

With Bitcoin’s (BTC) price struggling below $20,000, the asset’s mining activity appears to be thriving, with competition among miners continuing to grow. Consequently, this scenario has resulted in the Bitcoin mining hash rate hitting a new record high.
Indeed, as of September 25, Bitcoin’s mining hash rate spiked to a new all-time of 226.633 quintillion hashes per second s based on the 30-day moving average. The hash rate has been surging steadily from the lows recorded in early...-

New Technology Could Generate Electricity From Ocean Waves or Even Clothing, Cars, and Buildings
Imagine this: Clothing that charges your smart watch as you walk, buildings that vibrate in the wind and power your lights, a road that extracts energy from the friction created by moving cars, and flexible structures that change shape in ocean waves to generate clean electricity for communities around the world.
It is not science fiction. Someday, we could harness these naturally...-
